At least 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its role in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
